Saturday is National Dog Day

Dog lovers really love their furry friends. They’ll go to great lengths to ensure that their pups are well-loved, well-fed, healthy and happy.

Saturday, Aug. 26 is a day for all of us dog people to do even more than we usually do.

It’s National Dog Day. Begun in 2004, its aim is to promote not only healthy, happy relationships with our dogs, but also dog adoption. According to, “Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.”

The site reminds visitors that millions of dogs die in shelters each year, unwanted and alone, and promotes adoption: “Please consider bringing what was once considered ‘unwanted love’, into your heart and home on National Dog Day!”

Like nearly all national days, Dog Day brings a plethora of offers for products, special rates at hotels and more. But we want to highlight the best part of the day: the effort to find homes for all dogs in need. To that end, here are some local dogs looking for people to take them in, feed and care for them and — most and best of all — love them.
